Earliest memory of yoga
My mom practiced yoga when I was young, so I used to come in the room as a way to spend time with her. I tried to copy her every move; I had no idea what I was doing!
A complement to practice
Cooking and eating mindfully.
When did you know you wanted to be a yoga teacher
The first time I took a class with a really great teacher. I thought, man, I want to be able to illuminate as much about this practice to others as she has been able to illuminate to me. I’m still trying.
Native Southern Californian Julia Barry took her teacher training under the expert guidance of Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller 7 years ago. Throughout her 500 hours of teacher training, Julia continued to study under the watchful eye of many of the great Iyengar yoga teachers Los Angeles has to offer, including Lisa Walford, Marla Apt, Chris Stein, and Paul Cabanis. Iyengar yoga has become the backbone of her practice, but most importantly, it has taught her that she is her own greatest teacher. She also maintains a nourishing self practice–something she hopes to guide her students toward. In addition to leading workshops in the level two teacher training, Julia teaches a well-rounded yoga class, incorporating the flow and heat of Ashtanga yoga and the precision and restorative qualities of Iyengar yoga. Julia is proud to apply what she learns from yoga to her work with the non-profit organization Stand Up To Cancer.

“In my first teacher training, a philosophy teacher said: ‘You are not your body, you are not your mind, you are not your ego.’ I realized I had spent my life fixated on defining myself by those external things. I felt so free and approached my practice and my life with a completely different perspective from that point forward.”
